House Condemns Anti-Semitism and Other Forms of Hate

(March 7, 2019)

On March 7, 2019, the House voted 407-23 to approve a resolution condemning hate in all forms. The measure was prompted by anti-Semitic remarks made by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN). The resolution originally was written to specifically condemn anti-Semitism without mentioning Omar. After pressure from Omar’s defenders and other members who believed it was too limited and needed to be broadened to include other forms of bigotry, the language was modified and H. Res. 183 was the result. The members voting against the bill were all Republicans, several of whom said they did so because they objected to the change from the original language .
