On October 3, 1967, the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) of Israel published its initial findings of a census taken in the territories captured in the Six-Day War during that summer. A one-day curfew was imposed and Arabic-speaking census-takers went from house to house with the apparent exception of Bedouins dwelling in tents. (except what they called the 'wanderers', presumably the tent-living Bedouin). The population of each area according to the census follows:
Golan Heights – 6,400
Northern Sinai – 33,000 (30,000 in El-Arish)
Gaza – 356,000 (175,000 in refugee camps)
West Bank (excluding Jerusalem) – 600,000
