Aaron Nunez Cardozo

(1762 - 1834)

Aaron Nunez Cardozo was a wealthy English merchant who settled in Gibraltar. He was a leader of the Jewish community and simultaneously served as a consul to the beys of Tunis and Algiers. He uncovered a French conspiracy to betray the fortress of Gibraltar and was publicly recognized. During the Napoleonic Wars he was an intermediary with North African rulers, insuring that Gibraltar continued to receive food and water. His mansion became the city hall.
