Zionists

A Zionist is one who supports a Jewish homeland in the Land of Israel. This page lists links to biographies in the Jewish Virtual Library about some of the most prominent Zionists.

  • Theodor Herzl - Visionary of the Jewish State. Called for the convening of the First Jewish Congress. Wrote the influential books Altneuland and Judenstaat.
  • Stephen S. Wise - Reform Rabbi and first Secretary of the Zionist Organization of America.
  • Nahman Syrkin - Leader of the Socialist Zionists at the First Jewish Congress.
  • Ze'ev Jabotnisky - Established the Union of Revisionist Zionism, the Betar youth movement, and commander of the Irgun Tzvai Leumi.
  • Joseph Sprinzak - Leader of the socialist Zionst group Hapoel Hatzair, founder of the Histadrut, and three time member of Knesset.
  • Abba Hillel Silver - Founder of the United Jewish Appeal. Represented the American Zionist movement at the Zionist Congresses, president of the Zionist Organization of America, and president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis.
  • Nahum Sokolow - Secretary General, and later, President of the World Zionist Organization.
  • Samuel Mohilever - One of the founders of Religious Zionism and the Hovevi Zion movement.
  • Louis D. Brandeis - The first Jewish Judge of the Supreme Court of the USA, and Chairperson of the Provisional Executive Committee for General Zionist Affairs.
  • Enzo Sereni - The first leading modern Italian Zionist, he co-founded Kibbutz Givat Brenner. Captured and was murdered in Dachau after parachuting into Italy during the Second World War in an attempt to establish contact with Italian partisans.
  • David Gordon - The first Hebrew journalist to propagate Zionist views through his publications.
  • Max Nordau - Co-founder, vice president, and president of the World Zionist Organization.
  • Nahum Goldmann - Started the Encyclopedia Judaica, president of the World Zionist Organization, and co-founder of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.
  • Aryeh Louis Pincus - Chairman of South Africa's Zionist Socialist Party, represented the Labor Zionist Party at the Zionist Congress of 1946, and the first managing director of El-Al.
  • Arthur Ruppin - Known as “the father of Zionist settlement” and “the father of Jewish sociology.”
  • Leo Motzkin - Motzkin was active at the First Zionist Congress where he took part in the formulation of the Basle program, and took charge of the Zionist Organization office in Copenhagen during the First World War.
  • Baron Edmond James de Rothschild - Known as the "Father of the Yishuv", financed the founding of Zikhron Ya'aqov, Mazkeret Batya, Rishon Letzion, Binyamina, and other settlements.
  • Avraham Stern - Member of the Haganah and the Irgun Tzvai Leumi, he later founded the Lehi. Killed by the British for his armed opposition.
  • Chaim Weizmann - Member of the General Zionist Council, played a key role in the issuing of the Balfour Declaration, founded the Hebrew University and the Weizmann Institute, president of the World Zionist Organization, and the first President of the State of Israel.
  • Eli Cohen - Infiltrated Syria's government ranks as a spy for Israel. After being discovered, he was executed by the Syrians.
  • Ber Borochov - A Socialist Zionist, he co-founded the Labour Zionist Movement.
  • David Wolffsohn - Second President of the World Zionist Organization and the first President of the Jewish Colonial Trust.
  • Berl Katznelson - A leader of the Zionist labor movement and a central figure of the Second Aliyah.
  • Hayim Arlosoroff - Co-founder of Hapoel Hatzair, one of the leaders of the Histadrut, and later, Mapai. Murdered by unknown assailants in 1933.
  • Judah Leib (Fishman) Maimon - A member of the Zionist General Council, founder of the Mosad Harav Kook, the Mizrachi organization, and the Israeli Chief Rabbinate. Member of Knesset and Minister of Religions.
  • Nathan Birnbaum - Fundraiser for Zionist organizations, President of Hadassah.
  • Irma Levy Lindheim - Opposed the Uganda Scheme in the Zionist Congresses, one of the founders of Tel Aviv and its first mayor.
  • Meir Dizengoff - One of the founders and leaders of the HaPoel HaZair party.
  • Yosef Vitkin - One of the founders and leaders of the HaPoel HaZair party.
  • Gershon Agron - Member of the Jewish Legion, founder of the Palestine Post (which later became the Jerusalem Post), mayor of Jerusalem.
  • Chaim Hissin - Among the first Bilu pioneers and one of the founders of Ahuzat Bayit (which later became Tel Aviv).
  • Yehoshua Hankin - Known as "Redeemer of the Valley". Redeemed the land in which Rehovot, Hadera, Merhavia, Ein Harod, Tel Yosef, and Nahalal were founded.
  • Nathan Birnbaum - Coined the terms Zionist, Zionism, and Political Zionism.
