Background

On no more than four double-spaced pages, using 12-point type, please provide the following information numbered in the order of the items below. Please follow this format. Do not attach a curriculum vitae or a writing sample.

1. Education. List in reverse chronological order all education above the secondary school level, including training and professional courses. Indicate institutions’ names, locations, dates attended, degrees awarded, and fields of specialization.

2. Professional/Occupational Experience. List in reverse chronological order all major jobs held, including military service. Indicate job titles or descriptions, employing organizations, locations, and dates.

3. Honors. Indicate any fellowships, grants, and professional honors or awards, with dates received.

4. Experience. Describe any educational, professional, or personal experiences (e.g., academic study, jobs, travel, etc.) that have prepared you to pursue graduate research related to Israel.

5. Publications/Writing/Conference Papers. List any relevant publications you have authored or edited, using a full bibliographical reference. Give titles of unpublished writing (e.g., master’s thesis, seminar papers, papers presented at professional meetings), but do not include papers written for courses.

6. Other Interests. Describe your major interests, extracurricular pursuits, leisure activities, and hobbies.

Essay (All applicants)

Please write an essay that discusses why you wish to pursue an advanced degree, what area of research you are interested in, and what you hope to do with the knowledge you acquire during your studies. The essay should be no more than 1,000 words, double-spaced, using 12-point type.

Dissertation Project Description (Doctoral candidates only)

On no more than four double-spaced pages, using 12-point type, describe the work you will do if you receive a dissertation award.

1. Subject and Significance. What is the basic problem or question on which your dissertation focuses? Why is this topic important? What makes your research original and how will it advance knowledge in your field?

2. Methodology. What is the main thesis of your proposal? How will you test your hypothesis? What documents, interviews, archives, or other sources will you use in your research? Where will you conduct your research?

3. Timeline. Describe the steps that you already may have taken toward finishing your dissertation and those that remain (e.g., data gathering, data analysis, writing of draft chapters, draft revisions, final approval).What is required to complete these steps? When do you expect to complete the research, draft chapters, and final product?

4. Dissertation Committee and Advisor. List the names and departmental affiliations of the persons you expect to have on your dissertation committee, identifying the chair. You must include a letter from the dissertation advisor or dean certifying that you have completed all doctoral work and that your dissertation topic has been approved.
