Arthur Lourie

LOURIE, ARTHUR (Vincent; 1892–1966), composer. Lourie was born in St. Petersburg, where he also studied and converted to Catholicism in his early 20s. He became head of the music department of the Commissariat for Public Instruction after the Revolution. In 1920 he settled in Paris and immigrated to the United States in 1941. His compositions include symphonies, operas, ballets, and choral works in the avant-garde idioms of their respective periods, the later ones turning to the re-creation of old forms. Lourie also wrote a biography of Serge *Koussevitzky (1931).
