Harry Joshua Leon

LEON, HARRY JOSHUA (1896–1967), U.S. classics scholar and historian. Leon, born in Worcester, Massachusetts, taught classical languages at the University of Texas from 1923, was a research professor at the American Academy of Rome 1950–51, and was an active member of many learned societies. Apart from his work on Tacitus (19602) and translations of classical literature, Leon published a History of the Jews of Ancient Rome (1960) which was largely based on a careful analysis of inscriptions in the Jewish *catacombs in Rome.
