Solomon Lefschetz

LEFSCHETZ, SOLOMON (1884–1972), U.S. mathematician. Born in Moscow, Lefschetz received his doctorate in 1911 at Clarke University. During the years 1907 to 1910 he was employed by the Westinghouse Electric Manufacturing Company at Pittsburgh. He began his academic career in 1911 as an instructor at the University of Nebraska and after a number of appointments became research professor at Princeton University after 1933. He made important and significant contributions to algebraic geometry, topology, and differential equations. Among his published works are Algebraic Topology (1942); Algebraic Geometry (1953); Differential Equations (1957); and Stability Theory of Liapunov.
