Philip J. Joachimsen

JOACHIMSEN, PHILIP J. (1817–1890), U.S. jurist and communal worker. Joachimsen, who was born in Breslau, Germany, was taken to New York in 1827. He was admitted to the bar in 1840, and held several municipal attorneyships. Joachimsen was made brevet brigadier general for his service in the Civil War as organizer and commander of the 59th New York regiment. He served as judge of the Marine Court of New York from 1870 to 1876. Joachimsen was a leading figure in New York Jewry. He was president of the Hebrew Benevolent Society (1855), first president of the Hebrew Orphan Asylum (1859), and organizer of the Hebrew Sheltering Guardian Society for Children in New York (1879).
