Anthony D. Weiner

(1964 - )

Anthony Weiner is a former U.S. Representative who served New York's 9th congressional district from January 1999 until June 2011.

Anthony David Weiner was born on September 4, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York, one of three sons of Mort Weiner, a lawyer, and his wife Fran, a public high school mathematics teacher. He received his B.A. in political science in 1985 from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

Weiner began his career in public service as an aide to then-Representative Charles Schumer. He served Schumer on Capitol Hill and in New York City from 1985 to 1991. In 1991, at age 27, Weiner became the youngest person [to that point] ever elected to the New York City Council.

From 1992 through 1998, Weiner served in the City Council and developed a reputation as a thoughtful legislator and a "rising star".  The Daily News called him one of the "100 Fresh Faces, Leaders of the Next Century" and The New York Times wrote "he is considered one of the Council's brightest members and a gifted speaker...".

In 1998, when Mr. Schumer vacated his seat in Congress to run for the United States Senate, Anthony Weiner replaced his former boss as Representative from the 9th Congressional District. The 9th District includes the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Midwood, Sheepshead Bay, Manhattan Beach, Marine Park, Mill Island and Bergen Beach, and the Queens neighborhoods of Rockaway, Howard Beach, Woodhaven, Ozone Park, Forest Hills, Rego Park, Middle Village, Corona and Elmhurst.

In the 106th Congress, Congressman Weiner was selected by his colleagues to serve as Freshman Whip. He sits on the Committee on the Judiciary, where he serves on the Crime Subcommittee as well as the Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law. In addition, Weiner holds a seat on the Committee on Science where his subcommittees are Technology and Space and Aeronautics.

After taking office in January 1999, Congressman Weiner took the lead on a number of issues important to his constituents. Protecting the rights of seniors, and ensuring that Social Security and Medicare remain solvent for the millions who rely on these programs today, have been among Weiner's top priorities. Weiner has also been an outspoken opponent of crime, exhibiting strong leadership on issues of gun control and youth violence. In addition, Weiner has become well known for his legislative victories to curb airport noise, and for his efforts to end school overcrowding.

After posting a sexually suggestive photograph to his public Twitter account and facing a media scandal, Weiner resigned from Congress on June 21, 2011. In 2013, Weiner ran in the election for Mayor of New York City but lost in the primary after securing less than 5% of the vote.

Weiner married Huma Abedin, a longtime personal aide to Hillary Clinton, in July 2010.
