James Scheuer

(1920 - 2005)

James Haas Scheuer was a Jewish American politiican and member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Scheuer (born February 6, 1920; died August 30, 2005) was born in New York and graduated from the Fieldston High School in Riverdale in 1938. He recieved his A.B. from Swarthmore College in 1942, his I.A. from Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration in 1943 and his L.L.B. from Columbia University Law School in 1948. From 1943 to 1945, Scheuer served in the United States Army.

From 1951 to 1957, Scheuer worked on the staff of the Office of Price Stabilization. He was an unsuccessful candidate for Congress in 1962 but was later elected as a Democrat-Liberal to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 1964. Scheuer was subseuqently re-elected three times and served until January 1973.

After Congress, Scheuer served as president of the National Alliance for Safer Cities and president of the National Housing Conference. In November 1974, he won election back to the House and this time served until January 1993.

Following his retirement from Congress, he served as the United States Director of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development from 1994 until 1996.

Scheuer died of heart and kidney failure at age 85.
