Bertram L. Podell

(1925 - 2005)

Bertram L. Podell was a Jewish American politician and member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Podell (born December 27, 1925; died August 17, 2005) was born in Brooklyn and attended Yeshiva of Flatbush and Abraham Lincoln High School. He graduated from St. John’s University and recieved his law degree from Brooklyn Law School. Podell served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946.

From 1954 to 1968, Podell was an elected member of the New York State assembly. In a special election on February 20, 1968, Podell was elected to fill the vacancy in the U.S. House of Representatives caused by the resignation of Abraham J. Multer. Podell was subsequently reelected to the three succeeding Congresses and served until January 3, 1975. He was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1974.

After his congressional career, Podell returned to New York City and resumed the practice of law. Podell died in New York City in 2005.
