CITATION
At the battle of the Wilderness, on 6 May, 1864, he rallied and reformed the
disorganized fleeing Union troops from several regiments and established a new line
of defense that held. At the Battle of Petersburg, Virginia, 30 July, 1864, he bravely and
coolly carried orders to the advanced Union line while under severe fire from
Confederate troops.
