George Wald

(1906 - )


George Wald was born in 1906 in New York City. While researching the biochemistry of vision at Harvard University, he disclosed the presence of Vitamin A in the retina of the eye. Further discoveries of the molecular makeup and chemical interactions within the eyes of all species won this biologist the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1967. He was also politically engaged on behalf of international peace movements.
