Arafat Closes TV Station

(March 23, 2001)

The office of Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat ordered the closing of the Ramallah offices of Qatari television station Al-Jazira for allegedly broadcasting footage of Arafat's opponents in Lebanon holding a photograph of Arafat with a shoe attached to it after the PLO's withdrawal from Beirut in 1982. The PA considered the photo insulting.
