NASA Earth Observation Center Opens in Israel

On April 27, 1999, Israeli Science Minister Silvan Shalom dedicated NASA's regional Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) center in the Middle East, located at Tel Aviv University. The EOSDIS station, where satellite photographs will be received and processed, is one of nine such facilities outside the United States. These connect Canada, Japan, the UK, Russia and other European countries to the system, in addition to the eight information centers located in the United States. The EOSDIS center includes a database with information on Israel and the Middle East. It operates in the framework of Tel Aviv University's Inter-University Computation Center.
