Senate Symbolically Rebukes Iran
(September 25, 2007)
The Senate approved a measure, 76-22, calling on the State Department to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps as “a foreign terrorist organization,” an action that would allow for more economic sanctions to be placed on Iran. The measure was presented in the form of an amendment, co-sponsored by Senators Jon Kyl and Joe Lieberman, to the Defense Authorization bill, which is currently under consideration in the Senate. Legislators hoped to send a message to Iran to end its military tactics targeting U.S. forces in Iraq. The measure was passed just one day after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told the U.N. General Assembly that his country seeks only a peaceful nuclear program, illustrating that the Senate was not convinced by Ahmadinejad’s assertions.
