2012 Presidential Candidates' Views on the Middle East

Gary Johnson

Thoughts on Israel

Johnson advocates that the U.S. should reduce or eliminate foreign aid to Israel because “I think it’s a mistake that we [the U.S.] know what’s in Israel’s best interest—they do and they need to be left to decide that and determine that,” he told a Fox news correspondent in May 2011.

“Israel is a military ally, will remain a military ally, that it’s crucial for us to maintain those ties.”

I’ve stood on top of the Golan Heights, something that was secured after 1967, when they [Arab armies] were literally shelling Israel. They [Israel] had to take that territory; either take that territory or be bombed.”

“I think that we really do have a vested interest in Israel and that we shouldn’t walk away from that interest.”
- The American Conservative, December 7, 2010.
