Congress & the Middle East: Iran, North Korea & Syria Nonproliferation & Modernization Act

(December 14, 2011)

In December 2011, the House of Representatives passed the Iran, North Korea, and Syria Nonproliferation Reform and Modernization Act of 2011 (H.R. 2105) by a vote of 418-2. The measure strengthens existing U.S. sanctions against foreign entities that provide nuclear, chemical or biological weapons components to Iran, North Korea or Syria, and, for the first time, imposes sanctions on foreign entities that provide to or acquire from these countries any goods or technology that could be used for military applications.

According to the Committee on Foreign Affairs, H.R. 2105 expands sanctions on those assisting Iran, North Korea, and Syria in the development of their dangerous weapons programs, including their nuclear programs.  It was introduced by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) and had 46 cosponsors.

Chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) said, “It is not possible to stop Iran’s nuclear weapons program without targeting its nuclear program as a whole, because there is no safe dividing line between those activities and facilities that are purely peaceful and those which are military-related.”
