Terrorism: Senate Letter to Shultz Opposing Arafat Visa

(November 1988)

In response to reports that Yasser Arafat planned to ask for a visa to the United States, a group of Senators wrote a letter asking Secretary of State Shulz to deny any such request “until he and the PLO renounce terrorism as a tool of foreign policy. Before he is admitted into our country. Arafat and the PLO must accept the same reasonable requirements that the United States has consistently demanded in order to have dealings with them: formal recognition of Israel's rights to exist; acceptance of UN Resolutions 242 and 338; and elimination from the PLO Charter of the call for the destruction of Israel.”
