Israel's Population — 1998


At the end of 1998, the population of Israel was 6,037,000. The number of Jews totaled 4,783,000 (79.2%) and 1,254,000 are of other religions. The population includes 901,000 Muslims (14.9%), 129,000 Christians (2.1%), and 99,000 Druze (1.6%). The remainder did not list their religion.

The population grew 2.3% (137,000). Natural growth (birth over deaths) was 1.6%, the highest figure since 1990, with approximately 130,000 births (29% higher than 1989).

A total of 56,700 immigrants arrived in 1998, continuing a downward trend. Of these, 45,400 (80%) came from the former Soviet Union, down from 54,600 in 1997. Since 1989, more than 900,000 immigrants have arrived in Israel, 769,000 from the former Soviet Union (85.4%).
