The Abu Ghosh “Search and Rescue” Unit

(June 4, 2003)

On June 4, 2003, a dedication ceremony was held for the Abu Ghosh volunteer "Search and Rescue Unit." The unit, formed six months ago, is comprised of residents from the Israeli-Arab town of Abu Ghosh, and operates under the auspices of the IDF Homefront Command, as well as the Interior and Defense Ministries.

Members of the unit are trained in first aid, fire-fighting, and have completed a "level 2" course in rescue administered by the Homefront Command.

According to Major General Yosef Mishlav, Commander of the Homefront, the strengthening of ties with the Israel-Arab population is a priority.

Indeed, it should be noted that the Abu Ghosh "Search and Rescue" Unit is complimented by similar units in the Bedouin (southern Israel) and Druze (northern Israel) communities.
