Israeli Cabinet Expands

Five new Israel government ministers were sworn in August 5, 1999: Former IDF Deputy Chief of Staff Matan Vilnai (Labor) is the new Minister of Science, Culture, and Sport; Kibbutz member Chaim Oron (Meretz) is Agriculture Minister; Former IDF Chief of Staff Amnon Lipkin-Shahak became the new Minister of Tourism; Former Chief Rabbi of Norway Michael Melchior is Minister without Portfolio, responsible for Diaspora Jewry; and Prof. of Political Philosophy Yuli Tamir — the second woman in the government — is the new Absorption Minister.
