Center Party Dissolves

(February 28, 2001)

The Center Party, created in 1999 by a group of moderates from the Labor and Likud parties has broken up. Dalia Rabin-Pelossof, Amnon Lipkin-Shahak and Uri Savir asked Knesset Speaker Avraham Burg to recognize them as a new faction to be called "The New Way." Another Center Party founder, Dan Meridor may return to the Likud. Roni Milo may do so as well. The other member of the party, Yitzhak Mordechai, who was the party's candidate for prime minister, stepped down as party head last year to defend himself against allegations of sexual misconduct.
