Great Britian & the Holocaust: Dispatch on Persecution of Jews in Germany

(April 13, 1933)

Britain's Ambassador in Berlin, Sir Horace Rumbold, sent a dispatch to Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Sir John Simon outlining a new German propaganda campaign to counteract the hostility of the foreign press toward Hitler's regime.

Rumbold describes some of the hardships faced by Jews in Germany and notes that they have suffered and are still suffering “gross injustice.” The document is especially remarkable for the anti-Semitic views expressed by Rumbold in which he writes, for example, about the Jews' superiority over Germans in financial affairs as well as in an artistic and intellectual sense, while also observing that Germans are superior to Jews “in many respects.”
