Several American airmen parachuted to safety from their disabled plane in the vicinity of Schmedenstedt. The accused, along with three other SS men, obtained custody of two airmen, who were to be transported to Braunschweig. The accused, who was driving the car, escorted the prisoners as well as the SS men to Muenstedt. The passengers were dropped off as the accused went in search of a different vehicle. After he left the SS men shot and killed both airmen
