Archaeology in Israel: Roman era Mosaic

(November 2015)

The Israel Antiquities Authority announced the discovery of a large and intricate mosaic tile floor on November 19, 2015. The mosaic was estimated to be more than 1,700 years old, and measures 36 feet by 42 feet. Designs on the mosaic tile include images of animals, hunting images, birds, wood, and fish. The excavation director stated that the mosaic represented “a highly developed artistic ability,” by the maker. This mosaic was found just a few feet from one that was uncovered almost two decades ago, in the mid-1990's.
