A total of 23,085 men and women have been killed defending the land of Israel since 1860, the year that the first Jewish settlers left the secure walls of Jerusalem to build new neighborhoods.
Since the end of the War of Independence, 2,444 Israelis have been killed in terrorist attacks - 9 between Yom Hazikaron (Israeli Memorial Day) 2012 and 2013. Over the course of that year, 92 members of the security forces - police, IDF soldiers, security personnel and veterans - were killed in, or died as a result of injuries inflicted from, service to the state.
