Congress & the Middle East:
Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act

(July 25, 2017)

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act in a vote of 419-3 on July 25, 2017.  The following day the Senate approved the legislation, voting 98-2.  In addition to primarily targetting Russian officials in retaliation for their involvement in hacking the 2016 U.S. elections, the act also imposes new sanctions against Iranian and North Korean entities for illegal measures surrounding their missile programs.  An original version of the legislation, Countering Iran's Destabilizing Activities Act of 2017, was passed by the Senate on June 15, 2017.  President Donald Trump signed the legislation into law on August 2, 2017.  To read the full text of the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, please click here.
